Product Review: Sunrider SunSmile Fruit & Vegetable Rinse

When you buy fresh fruit and vegetables from the supermarket or produce market, you sort of assume that because you are buying fresh food you have no 'processing' or 'manufacturing' to worry about.

But most of the fruit and vegetables that we buy are smothered in dried chemicals to preserve their shelf life.  So, even the most healthiest eater who purchases organic fruit and vegetables and avoids processed foods is still consuming large quantities of potentially harmful chemicals within their diet.

None of this was important to me until I tried Sunrider SunSmile Fruit and Vegetable Rinse.




I had been purchasing Sunrider products for a few months, and when I could, I would try out products I hadn't tried before.  One day, I came across the rinse, and decided to purchase a small 'sample' bottle. I was on a health kick earlier this year, eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, and avoiding processed and convenience foods, so I was testing the rinse not really believing - or probably more accurately, not really fully understanding - the need for me to rinse my fruit and vegetables prior to cooking and eating with any but water as I had always done.

The day my order arrived I had just bought fresh broccoli and a punnet of strawberries, and excited by having a new product to test, I wasted no time to snip a portion of the broccoli and rinse it in a solution of my new Fruit and Vegetable Rinse.

The broccoli was a deep green, with a slight milky haze over it.  But after I had dipped and swished the broccoli portion in the bowl for a few seconds and then removed it, the broccoli's colour change was immediately noticeable.  It was now a vibrant deep green, and all traces of the milky haze had disappeared. I rested the cleaned broccoli on some paper towel for it to dry off, and the colour never faded.  And I have to admit, it went from looking drab and un-appetising to being vibrant and definitely what I was going to cook as part of dinner tonight!

The now empty bowl contained little bits of dirt and fallen off miniscule bits of broccoli but was otherwise still the way it had been before I had dunked the broccoli into the SunSmile Fruit and Vegetable Rinse, so, having secret fun cleaning my vegetable from its former non-visible impurities I pulled the carrots out of the vegetable basket, and decided to see if the carrots would come up looking cleaner and the colour more vibrant.  And bingo, the carrots transformed with renewed life too.

In my bowl, I next cleaned a tomato and a couple of apples.  Each time, the bowl ended up with more bits of dirt and the water was starting to go milky but the fruit and vegetables came out looking brighter, fresher and more vibrant than before its bath.

I wish I had of taken photo's of my experience - but I was just out impressing myself not worried about sharing this amazing product with other people.  The benefits of removing all the harsh chemicals off my food before I cook and eat them became immediately apparent to me that day, and I have been a regular rinser of my fruit and vegetables since that day. I guess, when I next buy fresh fruit and vegetables, I could always take before and after photo's and update this post to give you a visual of how much hidden dangers are removed just by using this one product.

Product Review: Sunrider SunSmile Toothpaste

As part of my series of Sunrider product reviews, today I would like to discuss Sunrider SunSmile Herbal Toothpaste.

Having had so much success with the products I was purchasing from Sunrider Australia, and having read that commercial toothpaste's contain ingredients that can be harmful to your teeth and mouth, I decided to try out Sunrider SunSmile Herbal Toothpaste. Again, the product was expensive and my budget was limited so I purchased the smaller of the two sizes available, figuring that if I didn't like it, at least I hadn't wasted my money on buying the family size one.

I don't know, I must have misread something when I ordered it because instead of receiving the Herbal toothpaste I instead had ordered the Whitening Gel.  Oh well, I reasoned, my teeth could probably do with a bit of herbal whitening.

Pleasant taste, teeth looked cleaner, but they didn't feel as clean as they could - but I remained mindful that I was using the whitening gel not the toothpaste.  So next order I was a bit more careful and this time ordered the herbal toothpaste.

Now I have tried herbal toothpastes before, and I haven't liked them, but the first thing I liked about Sunrider SunSmile Herbal toothpaste was that it smelt 'fresh' and looked like a pale mint coloured toothpaste - which is more natural than red and blue and white or orange of some of the commercial toothpastes I have tried.

SunSmile isn't a thick or dried looking when you add a small blob to your toothbrush; it squeezes easily, is more 'fluid' sort of like a tube of condensed milk in consistency.  But the best thing about SunSmile toothpaste is that it gently but powerfully cleaned my teeth leaving them feel like I had just been to the dentist. They were freshly cleaned of build up and my mouth felt pleasantly refreshed.  I had just discovered the toothpaste that I will now always use!

My little tube lasted a long time (I think about 2 - 3 months) despite my twice a day brushing routine so when it came time to  re-order, I didn't hesitate to purchase the family size - which is about the size you find in the supermarkets for all the commercial toothpastes.

I like using the whitening gel occasionally to give my teeth an extra and purposeful 'boost' in looking naturally whiter, but for the most part I only need to use the toothpaste only.  And, only needing a tiny blob is more than enough to do the job well so I am still using the same tube which I purchased months ago.

Product Review: Sunrider SunnyFresh

For the regular readers of my blog, you will know by now that I am a fan of Sunrider Herbal Foods and Beverages.

Today I want to discuss my like for Sunrider SunnyFresh.

From Sunrider website:

"Sunny Fresh® is a unique all-natural herbal food that soothes and revives a dry scratchy throat. It contains an extraordinary blend of concentrated herbs including licorice, peppermint and cloves, all traditionally used to aid digestion, soothe the stomach and freshen the breath"

I probably should have read this first.

For some reason, I was of the belief that SunnyFresh was a concentrate to help protect against common colds and flu, and believed the product to be a honey and lemon based concentrate to help you recover quickly when you come down with the dreaded cold.

Well last weekend I came down with the flu and believed the time was right for me to pull out the big gun recovery assistace.

Now, I don't know about you, but when I get sick I lose my appetite, and the only thing I seem to want to drink is good old fizzy drink Lemonade.  My personal favourite is Sprite.  When I get sick, knowing it is good to drink orange juice and honey, I pour a small amount into a glass, add a bit of honey and then add lemonade to make my own 'flu cocktail'.  But on this occasion, I believed I had something even better in my recovery-arsenal: Sunrider SunnyFresh.

So, instead of purchasing orange juice and honey, I simply poured a vial of SunnyFresh into my lemonade, and... yum, yum, yum!  Even though I was sick, I still tasted this delicious drink and wished it was something I could regularly drink!

My throat HAD been getting sore, and this bubbly sweet concoction relieved my sore throat and left it feeling relieved for hours, so I only needed to have a glass in the morning and a glass at night, and I felt as though my symptoms were relieved for hours on end.

Now, I know I'm not supposed to mix the herbal concentrate with sugar laden lemonade, but I was sick, and I needed to keep up my hydration, and this was a delicious and soothing way to achieve this.

I don't know if I got better sooner because of my having drunk his concentration or not, but I did start to develop a raw throat which never took hold like it normally does; but I can tell you right now, in my next order, I will be stocking up on more SunnyFresh - because we are heading into winter, and are at that stage within the season where the weather can't make up its mind if it is summer, spring, autumn or winter, so today might be a gloriously mildly warm day, tomorrow could be bitterly cold, and the day after could be an unseasonal heatwave.  All these unpredictable weather and temperature fluctuations usually results in everyone coming down with coughs and colds, so if it isn't me, then one of my family is sure to catch it.

I actually think (but can't prove or disprove) that the product assisted me to recover in faster time than I would of.

Product Review: Sunrider NuPuffs

So far, I have only written Sunrider product reviews for the products that I love.  Well, today, I'm going to give a balanced view and share with you how disgusting I found Sunrider NuPuffs.

Sunrider Australia, who I usually order my Sunrider products from, does not sell the company's full range of products.  So, whenever I discover in the company's newsletter that other products exists, I had to resort to ordering them online via other resources.

Now, I have absolutely no problem with the business that I order my non-available-in-Australia products from.  The website owners are just Sunrider consultants trying to earn a living selling Sunrider products online (and are doing a great job!).  And I am grateful that I have found them, because without the husband and wife team (and Sunrider website), I wouldn't be enjoying as many Sunrider products as I now am.

Until recently when my financial situation became a little on the tough side so I had to cut back on all luxury items, I was a regular consumer (since April 2012) of Sunrider Foods and Beverages.  I drink VitaDelight in Oat milk for breakfast most mornings, I sip on hot or cold Peach Fortune Delight throughout the day, or Calli Mint, and when I could afford it, I used to add the very expensive (for me, but well worth it) Sunrider Quinary to my VitaDelight - so each day, I was drinking products that cleanse, nourish and balanced my body.  And I felt fantastic for doing so! (Although, I admit it was ridiculously expensive for me to maintain doing this).

Because VitaDelight falls under Sunrider's Weight Management range, I also switched from using sugar to using their liquid Stevia called SunnyDew and tried the companies Sunbar in both the chocolate and fruit variety.  I'll admit, I love the SunnyDew, but couldn't see the appeal of eating the Sunbar's because the taste was... something to be acquired... but nothing my tastebuds wouldn't get used to.

 

But, for those of you who have been reading other posts on my Blog will know that one of my goals is to reduce my weight. It was one of the reasons why I tried the VitaDelight in the first place.  I had tried other 'meal replacement' diets, but the results are always only temporary:  as soon as you start eating again - which you will do so eventually - the weight goes piling straight back on. Plus a few extra kilos than when you started.

I started using the VitaDelight as part of making healthy food choices rather than dieting ones; and I am happy to report, that my new health kick using Sunrider products helped me lose ten excess kilos.  Naturally, with a bit more than ten kilos needing to go, I became keen then to try Sunrider's other Weight Management products to help myself along on the slow reducing but mindfully remaining healthy path.

At some point, I discovered that America sells NuPuffs.

NuPuffs are designed by Sunrider to be a replacement for chips and biscuit like snacks.  NuPuffs come packets like chips, and sort of look like popcorn or cheesy balls.  Actually, one IS a cheesy ball, because NuPuffs come in three flavours:  cheese, cocoa and apple cinnamon.

Now, NuPuffs are meant to be a filling snack, to help you eat less and feel full longer.  I found this to be true.

Although expensive for me to order in American dollars and pay higher shipping costs, I placed an order and purchased one box of each flavour from my American supplier. So, all up, I was getting six packets of each flavour, which, if worked as expected, would be oughly a month's supply of healthful snacks. I was impatient waiting for me order to arrive.

I started, like all chocoholics, with the cocoa flavour.  I wasn't able to finish the entire small packet, because they did make me feel full very quickly.  But I wasn't too keen on the chocolate flavour.  So a day or two later, I tried the apple-cinnamon.  Again, I got full, but I disliked the flavour of the apple-cinnamon too (actually, even more than the cocoa).

I just could not finish either of the packets of cocoa or apple-cinnamon NuPuffs that I opened. (They are still sitting there in a sealed container because no one else in my household is going to eat them either.  And I still have the other five packets remaining - do you want them?)

I liked the 'crunch' like you get when you eat non-diet  and non-health friendly chips and biscuits, but I was turned off by the horrible taste (sorry, Sunrider.  I don't know how anyone can say that NuPuffs are yummy!)

I was so turned off from the lack of tastebud compatability, I didn't end up trying the cheese flavour for nearly four months. But I had paid a lot of money to order those products, so trying out the last flavour, I eventually did.  That was last week.

My review of this product is: Yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck!

Okay, how can I best describe this so you understand how truly disgusting NuPuffs were for me?  Easy!  Let's visit Harry Potter!

Remember when Dumbledore told Harry that he was turned off eating Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans because he had once tasted a vomit flavoured one?  Well, I am warning you now: I now know exactly how Dumbledore felt!  Because the closest thing that I have come to eating Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans Vomit flavoured beans was me finally trying NuPuff Cheese. Actually, NuPuff Cheese tasted so much like vomit for me, that with my queasy stomach, I went from spitting the disgusting stuff out to really vomitting over the taste.



Like mentioned in my other Sunrider reviews: I love most of Sunrider products, but just not this one (again, sorry, Sunrider, but NuPuffs and my tastebuds just do not match).

Anyone want to try NuPuff for their own self (which you should probably do in case your taste buds do match)?  I have five packets of each flavour that I am more than happy to just giveaway!  You pay the postage, and I will race up to my post office and ship you the packet(s) with my greatest pleasure (and amazement that you would think I'm am as woefully wrong as Humphrey Belcher when he thought the time was right to introduce cheese cauldrons - dammit, you've set me off into Harry Potter mode)..

I'm going to stick to Sunrider's NICE, wonderful-tasting products (when I can afford them again): Calli, Fortune Delight, VitaDelight, Quinary and Evergreen. I really, really, recommend you try these, no hesitation.

On a side note about Sunrider products, over the last month, since I have not been able to afford to keep up my Cleanse, Nourish and Balance consumption, my health has declined.  I'm again feeling sluggish and without the energy and vitality that I had been feeling while I consumed the CNB combo daily.  So, the products do work.

(Just some don't taste so good to me as others. It seems to me that the products Sunrider produce are either absolutely delicious or absolutely disgusting - no 'in between').

Product Review: Sunrider Evergreen

Not getting enough vegetables in your diet? 

The beneficial properties of chlorophyll within green vegetables are why we are always being urged by dieticians and health authorities to include vegetables in our diets. 

Sunrider produces a liquid concentrate that has a delightful mild mint flavour. 

Like a lot of people, I simply don’t eat enough green vegetables in my diet, and one day because I read that Evergreen has a pleasant minty flavour, I thought I might try adding this Sunrider product to my ever increasing range.

I added it to a cup of hot peach Fortune Delight (see review here), and absolutely fell in love the combined taste.  I’ve been addicted to Evergreen ever since.

Evergreen is rather expensive, so I treat myself only once or twice a week maximum.  I don’t feel instant effects like I do with say using Sunbreeze Essential Oil (see my product review of this highly valuable oil here) but like I have mentioned in other posts, since I started using Sunrider products from April 2012, my health has improved dramatically.  I have more energy and vitality that had been lacking.

Evergreen comes in a box containing 10 vials.  I think sunlight causes chlorophyll to lose some of its beneficial potency, because the little glass bottles are that dark yellowy-brown and the cardboard box is a thick and sturdy variety. I keep my box of Evergreen in a kitchen cupboard where (I used to) keep all my other teas, coffees and sweeteners but which has now sort of become a Sunrider cupboard instead now.

I have the small quirk of when I use a bottle once it is empty I then return it, upside down, back to where I pulled it out from. I do this so I can immediately determine which bottles are used and which ones I can still use. 

I gain ‘value’ for money by not rinsing the vial out at the time that I pour its contents into my Peach Fortune Delight.  Then, when I have run out of Evergreen, I know I have two (weaker) drinks left to go because I use five of the ten bottles, add water to each, recap and give it a vigorous shake then add each of the vials diluted concentrate to the eleventh and twelfth cups, and it still tastes great!

I always feel more energetic in the days following drinking Evergreen with Peach Fortune Delight.  It is on these increased energy days that I am raring to jump on the treadmill and go for a twenty to thirty minute walk, and often up the pace and incline more than normal.

For ten bottles of Evergreen it costs about forty five Australian dollars, which is rather expensive when you live on a tight budget; but, it works out to about four dollars fifty cents (Australian) per cup.  I figure, I don’t buy a takeaway coffee on my way to work like a lot of my colleagues do, but the costs are about the same – so all I’m doing is paying for my ‘treat’ beverage once a week instead of once a day.  And, I’m spending it on giving my body foods and drinks that are far more beneficial than not.  Now that I’m not running on false highs gained from cigarettes and coffee drinking, I can now feel the real energy gained from having consumed my Sunrider health products and home-cooked ‘healthiest option from what is available to me’.

IF Evergreen was cheaper, I would drink it more frequently. I recommend you trying Evergreen if you are looking to boost the equivalency of eating green leafy vegetables, and encourage anyone who is not meeting eating their green vegetable requirements to purchase this concentrated booster into their diet as soon as possible.

Product Review: Sunrider VitaDelight

Today I will continue with reviewing Sunrider Herbal products.  So far, I have covered Sunbreeze Essential Oil here, and Sunrider Cleansing Herbal Teas Fortune Delight and Calli tea here.

                   

Sunrider promotes that all of their products are created under their Philosophy of Regeneration, that is, that in order to achieve optimal health one needs to Cleanse, Nourish and Balance the body’s systems. Sunrider hasn’t stated anywhere on their website or within their products literature that I can find which of the three categories Sunbreeze Oil comes under. But, I imagine as a consumer who regularly uses and sings this oil’s praises, that Sunbreeze Oil probably does all three: cleanse, nourish and balance. Which is what makes it so good, and makes it so invaluable to have in your medical cabinet. My little bottle of magic potion (yes, I like writing fantasy).

Fortune Delight and Calli teas are listed under the Herbal Beverages category on the website www.sunrider.com, and VitaDelight under Weight Management. Whereas Fortune Delight and Calli cleanse your body (at a cellular level not a bowel detoxing one) VitaDelight nourishes the body with a large range of vitamins, minerals and nutrients as Whole Food Nutrition*. (*Whole Food Nutrition, from what I can determine, means that the body recognises the ingredients as a Food compilation, as opposed to a cocktail of chemicals to process and is therefore the better intake).

When I was first researching the merits of Sunrider products between ordering a replacement Sunbreeze Oil and ordering Fortune Delight and Calli tea and other products, I read (somewhere) that by drinking/eating a combination of products that cleanse, nourish and balance the body, each meal provides the equivalent of gaining the vitamins and minerals like that of eating 78 different foods – without all the overeating if you could manage to whip together a meal containing so much nutritional variety.  But, and I do apologise to the original source of that information, I didn’t record the details of the website where I read this (so I can cite for you now the original creator of that detail).  The information was presented as a ‘fact’ that I then retained in my memory – and which I am not claiming as fact; only as my personal belief.

The (minor) trouble I have had with Sunrider products is that some of its instructions for use can be ‘vague’ or ‘non-committed’.  This is definitely the case with the VitaDelight. For example, instructions might be ‘mix with Fortune Delight or Calli, or in a glass of skim milk.’ To me, who wanted to ‘manage my weight’ I would have preferred clear instructions, ‘Mix with 300 ml of Fortune Delight Peach’ rather so many options. But, as I have realised, Sunrider is not another meal replacement company even though that, essentially, is how you are meant to consume this product.

VitaDelight is concentrated herbs crushed into powdered form and comes in two flavours: chocolate (available) and strawberry (not available to purchase directly from Sunrider Australia). After a much ‘trial and error’ I have personally settled upon drinking VitaDelight as a Breakfast Meal replacement on the days I cannot manage to eat breakfast (see my post Overcoming the problem of skipping breakfast here), and having it in a diluted solution of Oat Milk as my favourite. (I have tried it in skim milk, soy milk, almond milk, rice milk and in fortune delight and Calli).

For me, the chocolate flavour, and creamy oat milk are a great combination.  The Oat Milk provides the stable base to manage and sustain my blood sugar levels (like when you eat porridge) and the VitaDelight provides the flavour (I can’t stand the taste of Oat Milk on its own). I gain the benefit of having stabilised blood sugar levels and sustained energy until lunch time (a good thing) at the cost of drinking about 100 calories more than if I had chosen water or a lesser calorie milk base.  But, I also have the small cost of drinking a ‘grainy’ drink rather than a ‘smooth’ one – and I’m used to it now, even though it was a bit ‘strange’ when I first started drinking it like this – because the VitaDelight and Oat Milk take much longer to combine into a smooth chocolate milk type drink. I often add a packet of Quinary (the Sunrider product for balance) so I am gaining the full effect each day of cleansing, nourishing and balancing my body.

Generally a typical day for me goes something like this: If I need something a bit more filling, I either eat a piece of fruit or cut back on how much I dilute the Oat Milk by. (Usually I go 300 ml oat milk, 200 – 250 water, because I like plenty to drink.  On a “I can’t stomach anything day’ I might weaken my drink to 200 – 250 ml oat milk and the rest of my 600 ml (ish) shaker bottle with water, but on a ‘I’m starving day’ I might go as high as 400 ml oat milk and the rest water. If I’m even hungrier than all that, I either eat breakfast that day, or add a piece of fruit like a banana or yoghurt with my liquid meal).

I have been drinking VitaDelight for breakfast since about October 2012.  Unlike protein shake style diet programs where you have to follow a program of drinking a shake for breakfast and lunch and force your body into a state of toxic shock (ketosis) to force weight reduction, I am simply drinking my ‘meal replacement’ on the mornings when I can’t stomach eating food, and am choosing the ‘healthiest option from the choices available to me’ for both lunch and dinners. Generally, I make own lunch and take it to work (I prefer homemade foods to takeaway of any sort, any day); it only takes a few minutes in the morning and has become a part of my morning getting-ready-for-work routine, so my lunch choices are usually a sandwich with sliced deli meat (turkey is my favourite) with some salad ingredients and a yoghurt with fruit as a after sandwich dessert.  Dinner, depends on my family: am I making a ‘single person’ meal, a ‘not everyone’ meal, a ‘everyone in my household me’, or even a ‘everyone plus extra people’ meal.  We eat meat and three vege style meals, meat and vege in sauce over rice or pasta meals, and we make homemade takes of takeaway foods – I much prefer my home made single serve pizza portions to any of the bought stuff.

And, since I have been following this choosing the ‘healthiest option from the choices available to me’ diet, I have lost about ten kilo.  I’d probably lose a bit more if I stuck to my walking schedule more rigidly, but I’m not striving to reach the end goal in the shortest possible timeframe – I’m after permanent weight reduction and best health.

VitaDelight come in a box of 10 large sachets – so at one shake a day, I go through three boxes per month.  But, occasionally, I even have two shakes per day.  Not because I’m trying to force weight loss; on the days I can only stomach highly diluted shakes for breakfast, I tend to find I am not hungry even at lunchtime so the nourishing my body with a fluid-based meal is actually a measure I have adopted to prevent myself from uncontrolled eating once dinner kicks in.

As mentioned above, VitaDelight can be added to Calli or Fortune Delight or plain water or milk depending on your individual preference and tastes.

Once again, this is a product that I highly recommend due to the definite health improvements I have experienced since April 2012.
